I try to live a quiet analogue life so having a website about myself and my work hasn’t come easy. I certainly don’t have the time or inclination to self-promote via ‘social media’. That said, having found me here, I hope you enjoy exploring the site’s pages. The blog will continue to be added to and the site will be updated as I rethink various aspects of it. As you will discover, I have many irons in several fires. Do look at my forthcoming courses and perhaps even invite me to speak to your group. My interests and knowledge is pretty wide-ranging, you could say encyclopaedic! I suppose it all comes from an insatiable curiosity. Where that comes from is anyone’s guess.
I teach…
I have been working in the field of adult education for over thirty years. My courses in cultural history are designed to engage and enlighten. I don’t do boring. Music is often featured and I only use the best recordings available, at least in my opinion. All of my presentations are carefully constructed and supported by brilliant images. Handouts written by me, including useful chronologies, are normally provided.
I speak…
Alongside my courses I’ve also developed an extensive list of illustrated talks across a range of subjects. They are perhaps less onerous than the courses but expertly put together nevertheless. Have a look at my current list of talks (click below) and contact me if you would like me to speak to your group.
I explore…
Although I can’t juggle to save my life, on a less visible level I am usually pretty busy with several projects. As you will see from my ‘about’ details, I have been involved in many archaeological adventures (it’s a wonderful place to stretch the philosophical brain), I also paint, garden and have an ongoing involvement in promoting the arts. My latest project involves researching the history of Poundbury – a utopian development on the outskirts of Dorchester that some people hate whilst others love… some just find it very odd indeed!
I blog…
This is my new venture for 2023. In the blog I will post various musings on subjects and issues that come to mind. Some of these will be about Dorset, others on cultural matters and some even political. I hope to include some great pics to enliven the experience. If you want to comment on what I write then please do. The most salient of which I will publish for others to see.
Dorset on Toast?
A bit daft perhaps, though it usually creates a smile! There’s no real reason for the name other than that Dorset is my home as well as a simply amazing county, quirky, mostly unspoilt and beautiful. And who doesn’t like a bit of warm toast dripping with butter and melted cheese?
